Rough-lentied Hawk - J. Uhittle December 31, 1993
observed in flight. Uings held at small dihedral.
In comparison with Red-tailed Hawk nearby, if appeared to
have a longer wing span relative to the length of the body
and to have a slightly longer tail. The upper wing surface
was brown, with an almost translucent white window
separating the brown from the very dark tips of the five
outermost primaries. This window was more or less
rectangular in shape, encompassing the base of the first
seven or eight primaries. The window was visible from the
underside also. The upper tail surface was dark, mottled
with white, somewhat whiter at the base. One tail feather
was missing. The underside of the wings showed linings that
were heavily marked with dark spanwise marks on a light
background. The dark marking were noticeable prominent in
the carpal areas, although these areas were not solidly
dark. No solid dark markings in patagial area. The
secondaries showed much lighter markings, largely confined
to the base. The throat and upper breast were dark brown
with some white mottling. The belly was dark brown/black,
somewhat mottled with white. The leg feathers were dark
brown. The ventral area was light. The tail was spread

light background. May be same bird described in November at
location two miles to the east.
