Transcript | VOLUME 42, No. 3 March, 1993 The Spoonbill Published by The Ornithology Group, Outdoor Nature Club, Houston COMING EVENTS Monday, April 5: ORNITHOLOGY GROUP MEETING. Please note our new meeting time, 7:00 pjn., at Bayland Community Park located on the north side of Bksonnet just west of Hillcroft. OG member, Winnie Burkett, will present a program on how birds use islands. In thk program, we will explore islands in three different parts of the country to learn why they are important to birds and interesting to birders. Winnie grew up in Florida where she began birding at an early age. She lived in the northeast for many years where she was in charge of a banding station associated with the University of Connecticut and was an officer and board member of the Connecticut Ornithological Society. She k currently membership coordinator for the OG and compiles the Attwater Prairie-chicken NWR Christmas Bird Count. She ako does censusing at Bolivar Flats and Attwater Prairie-chicken NWR in addition to leading field trips for various local bird clubs. Learning Corner will begin at a new time beginning thk month, 6:30 pjn. Karen Beekman will talk on "Bird Topography: Feather Facts." Bring a field guide with a diagram that shows the parts of a bird. Saturday, April 17: OG FIELD TRIP TO HIGH ISLAND. On thk trip, during the height of spring migration along the Upper Texas Coast, we should see lots of shorebirds and passerines. Meet our leader, John Bregar, at roadside picnic area north of High Island (west side of State Highway 124). John plans to bird High Island and surrounding area and possibly Anahuac NWR later. Bring a sack lunch and bug spray. Questions? Call John Bregar...360-7769. Wednesday, April 21: OG WEEKDAY FIELD TRIP TO HIGH ISLAND for migrating passerines. Scheduled near the peak of migration, we'll search both Boy Scout Woods and Smith Oaks for warblers, buntings, thrushes, et al! Meet Gail Luckner and Winnie Burkett at 8:30 a.m. at Boy Scout (Audubon) Woods near the restrooms. Bring insect repellent! Questions? Call Gail...328-6236. Monday, May 3: ORNITHOLOGY GROUP MEETING. 7:00 p.m. Harris County Bayland Community Park. OG member, Marilyn Crane, will present a program about the birds of Australia where she traveled extensively last year. Born and raked in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Marilyn, a retired geologkt, has been an OG member since 1968 and served a two-year term as chairperson in the 1970's. She k actively involved in censusing at Attwater Prairie-chicken NWR and other area parks and participates in several Christmas counts each year. Remember our new starting times: Learning Corner at 6:30 pjn. with the meeting following at 7:00 pan. Saturday, May 15: OG FIELD TRIP TO EAST TEXAS to view Red-cockaded Woodpecker, Brown-headed Nuthatch, Bachman's Sparrow, Prairie Warbler and other avian inhabitants of the Piney Woods. Meet our leader at White Memorial Park at 6:00 a.m. To reach White Memorial park take J-10 east from Houston. Turn right at Hankamer Road exit, State Highway 62. The entrance to White Memorial Park k on the west side of 61 just south of I-10. Wednesday, May 19: OG WEEKDAY FIELD TRIP TO GALVESTON ISLAND. We'll be covering several areas of the island for shorebirds and passerines and expect to see both migrants and summer residents. Thk as a great trip last year! Meet Gail Luckner and Winnie Burkett at 8:00 a.m. where Seawall Blvd. ends at the extreme east end of Galveston Island. Bring insect repellent and scopes and plan to bird until early afternoon.
