Transcript CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE I was aghast when OG Treasurer Mike Gremillion suggested we attempt to spend some surplus OG money. With considerable effort on Mike's part he convinced me to at least look into the idea, and after a little research and discussion it became apparent that maintaining a large surplus of money is not the goal of a nonprofit organization like the OG. Early in the year we asked for suggestions on ways to spend our money and the membership responded with some good ideas. I asked certain people to research a particular idea and present it at our May meeting. Thanks to all of you that devoted your time to researching and presenting. After each person presented their topic the membership voted. Of the twelve topics presented and voted on, only three—the T-shirts, patches and buttons were voted down. I hope in the future we can develop the T-shirt and patch ideas. The membership decided to spend $45.00 for new slides for Dick Whanger to add to his collection of slides he uses when he makes presentations to grade school children. I consider the $1,500.00 earmarked to upgrade the computer on which The Spoonbill is printed to be money well spent. // The remainder of our surplus funds went to various organizations that are directly or indirectly involved in saving birds and bird habitat. The Houston Arboretum and Nature Center, Texas Ornithological Society, Katy Prairie Initiative, Barker-Cullen Reservoir, Texas Rare Bird Alert, and Birders Exchange of Massachusetts (an organization involved in supplying optics to Latin American ornithologists) will each receive $500.00. After all the voting we spent a total of $4,545.00 of the $5,000.00 we had hoped to spend. The bad news about the May meeting is we ran short of time and never had an opportunity to allow members to show their wonderful slides. I hear there were quite a few. Maybe sometime in the future there will be another opportunity for members to present their slides. Enjoy the summer and I hope to see all of you at our next meeting on August first. As usual the meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. with the Learning Corner followed by the regular business meeting and program at 7:00 p.m. David Bradford, 855-2615.
