Transcript 2- VOLUME 43, No. 5 May, 1994 The Spoonbill Published by The Ornithology Group, Outdoor Nature Club, Houston COMING EVENTS SATURDAY, JUNE 4: 5TH ANNUAL OG POTLUCK PICNIC AND FIELD TRIP AT BRAZOS BEND STATE PARK. Meet at the park headquarters at 7:30 a.m. for a half day of birding followed by a potluck picnic at Noon when we put down our binoculars and pick up forks and knives for some of the best food in town! Bring your favorite, easy-to-serve dish to share with fellow OG members. Be prepared for a great time, hot weather and mosquitoes! To reach Brazos Bend State Park, follow US 59 south past the Brazos River, then follow the signs. For those without the Texas Conservation Pass, be prepared to pay the $5 per vehicle entrance fee to the park. Call Dave Bradford if you have any questions, 855-2615. See you there! SATURDAY, JULY 23 AND AUGUST 20: OG PELAGIC TRIPS OUT OF PORT O'CONNOR. On these deep water trips off the continental shelf we'll look for species rarely seen in Texas waters such as Storm-Petrels (Wilson's, Leach's and Band-rumped are very possible.) Audubon's Shearwater is likely as are Masked Booby and Bridled and Sooty Terns. Trips near this area last year found these birds and extremely rare Brown Noddy and White-tailed Tropic Birds. The plan is to follow birds until people have had good views. Many previous trips have not gone to areas of deep water where the pelagic species of birds are found and no one can guarantee birds, but these trips should have an excellent chance for rarities. Sperm whales and other cetaceans inhabit these waters and trips last year had Whale sharks swimming around the boat. The 65-foot crewboat can attain speeds of 15-20 knots and has a flat open rear deck with shade, an air conditioned cabin and turdy rails at the bow. The cost is $85 per person. Call or write Dwight Peake to sign up. (409) 740-4621, 30 Lebrun Court, Galveston, TX 77551 MONDAY, AUGUST 1: OG MEMBERSHIP MEETING. Harris County Bayland Community Center. Learning Corner begins at 6:30 p.m. followed by the business meeting and program at 7:00 p.m. The topics of Learning Corner and the program will be announced in the combined June/July issue of The Spoonbill, which you should receive late in July. Deadline for the June/July issue is July 11, 1994. Have a great summer and see you August first. NORTH CAROLINA PELAGIC TRIPS: Spaces are still available on trips scheduled for August 13, August 14 and August 15. The trips on August 13 and 14 are out of Cape Hatteras and cost $75 per person per trip. The August 15th trip is out of Manteo and costs $85 per person. The schedule is flexible and some people plan to go on one or two pelagic trips and bird on land the other day.
