Transcript The Spoonbill A Publication of the Ornithology Group Of the Houston Outdoor Nature Club May 2001 Chairman's Message A Challenge for All OG Members Right before I started to write this message, I heard that President Bush's budget has now passed both the House and the Senate. I've not heard the numbers, but I'm willing to bet that there is not a lot of money in that budget for conservation! First we had the promise of drilling in Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, then his unearth-friendly cabinet choices, now this. Is this a disaster for the environment? I've come to a conclusion that it might just be the savior ofthe environment. I suspect if the election had turned out another way, we would all be resting on our laurels leaving the saving ofthe last great places to our good friend Al Gore. That didn't happen and we're going to have to find another way to save what's left. This is a call to arms for all those that care about the environment! We are going to have to do it ourselves! No one in Washington is going to be doing it for us. We are going to have to fight the good fight, every one of us. We're going to loose some battles, but we will become stronger and smarter, tougher and meaner for the next fight. Sure we'll get knocked down in the mud, but that's where we like it, that's what we are fighting for. Have you ever looked at the figures on charitable giving? Something like 70% of all charitable gifts come from individuals, and most of that comes from people of middle income or less. Corporate giving comes to about 5%, and most ofthe rest comes from private foundations.
