Transcript _<<ecommended Reading Last of the Curlews by Fred Bodsworth (Counterpoint; 1995) With the skill of a trained naturalist and a direct and elegant prose style, Fred Bodsworth tells of a solitary Eskimo curlew's long and perilous migration. In this detailed story of a single bird whose species is now all but extinct, Bodsworth conveys the mechanics of its remarkable flight and its instinctive search for others of its kind. The lone survivor comes to stand for the entirety of a lost species, and indeed for all in nature that is endangered. Of interest to OG members will be the reports of Eskimo Curlew sightings on Galveston Island noted in chapter introductions entitled The Gantlet and in the Epilogue. One sighting quoted at length was reported by Joseph M. Heiser, Jr. and published in American Ornithologists' Union publication The Auk. The late Mr. Heiser was a founding member of the Outdoor Nature Club. Canadian writer Fred Bodsworth is a former president of Canada's Ornithological Society and the author of many books, of which this novel, originally published in 1955, was the first. He has been a newspaper reporter, a writer for Maclean's magazine, and the author of many books and articles on natural history. He lives in Toronto.
