Seventy birders gathered at Anahuac NWR Saturday, September 25. Under David Dauphin's
efficient leadership, first timers to the marsh buggy—almost 20—had the first trip.
Russell Clapper, refuge manager, drove the buggy all morning for 3 different groups
and found at least one yellow rail for each trip (the third trip saw four). Also
seen: 5 King, 5-10 Virginia, 2 Sora Rails, Short-billed Marsh Wren, 3+ American Bitterns, Owl sp.. Marsh Hawk, Pheasant, Yellowthroat. Snow and Canada Geese, Blue-wingec
Teal, Pintail, Mottled Duck. The bird activity by Shoveler Pond, was generally very
slow, but the successful marsh rides pleased all participants. —Phyllis Nimmons
