Transcript THE CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE The OG will have a special opportunity at our November meeting to say thanks to some special friends. As many of you know, a fellow member, Steve Gast, sought and obtained underwriting of the checklist's production on our behalf from Phillips 66. The two gentleman from Phillips who were responsible for producing the checklist have accepted an invitation and will be present for a brief awards presentation at this meeting. I hope you will plan on attending and help make Mr. Mark McElroy of Houston and Mr. Philip Caudill of Bartlesville, Oklahoma feel truly welcome. We have a fine birding program scheduled to complete the evening's activities and I hope we can make our meeting a pleasant experience for these gentlemen. There is some work for folks of our persuasion to do in this political season. In addition to voting for the candidates of your choice prior to coming to the November meeting we have some letter writing to do. Specifically we need to encourage our friends on the Galveston County Commissioners Court to maintain the traffic barricade at Bolivar Flats. Those who bird there regularly are aware of the deteriorating condition of the bollards placed there a few years ago as a result of Stennie Meadow's efforts. We want to applaud Galveston County for their commitment to the protection of the area utilized by nesting Least Terns, Wilson's Plovers, Horned Larks and others. The nesting activities in the Flats area pales by comparison during late summer as tremendous flocks of migrating shorebirds begin their annual staging along the Upper Texas Coast. A non- birder might have some difficulty understanding the importance of areas such as this to migrating birds, and so it is up to us to inform responsible parties of the necessity for maintaining the barricade. Please address your letters to Judge Ray Holbrook or Commissioner Eddie Barr, Galveston County Courthouse, 722 Moody St., Galveston, Texas 77550. If you are one of our members who lives in Galveston County I don't need to tell you how much more important are your comments than mine. But I will be writing my letter anyway; it might be helpful to generate movement toward the establishment of the Flats as a National Wildlife Sanctuary. I hope you noticed the excellent presentation- of the minutes of our September meeting by Kathy DeFord. Kathy has agreed to fill in the term of our elected secretary whose work will prevent his performing this duty. Thanks to you, Kathy, and thank you all the many folks who do the many unseen .tasks that make up our group's activities. Richard Uzar, Chairman Built to Endure ulletin.
