Editor VOLUME XXXVm, No. 11 November, 1989 Q&tt-U+fi Evt^U Friday, Dec. 1: John O'Neill, noted ornithologist and bird painter will talk on painting birds at 7:30 p.m. at Museum of Natural History. FREE to OG members. Tuesday, Dec. 5: Ornithology Group meeting at 7:30 p.m. at Bayland Park on Bissonnet just west of Hill- croft. Richard Uzar and P.D. Hulce will talk on "Good Birds on Houston CBC's" and Steve LaBuda will update us on the perilous condition of the Att- water's Prairie-Chicken. Steve is Manager of Att- water's Prairie-Chicken NWR. NOVICE TIME: David Bradford: "Identifying Sparrows." Monday, Dec. 11: Steering Committee meeting, 7:30 p.m., at Jerry and Nancy Patrick's, 814 St. Francis, Houston 77079. Members are welcome. Saturday, Dec. 16: HOUSTON CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNT. This count is sponsored by the OG and all members are urged to participate. Call Richard Uzar or an area leader as per the article on this page, or enroll at the December meeting. Tuesday Jan. 9: Ornithology Group meeting. N.B. Rather than meeting the day after New Year's Day we are meeting on the 2nd Tuesday of the month. Saturday, Jan. 13: Ornithology Group field trip to West Harris and Waller counties. Friday-Sunday, Jan. 26-28: Ornithology Group field trip to Rockport and Aransas NWR. REPORT DEAD WATERFOWL The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is asking birders to report any dead or dying waterfowl they may see when birding so that an epidemic can be controlled or prevented, or any toxic hazard discovered quickly. Do not handle the birds, or even go close to them, but call (800) 792-1112 statewide to report. JOHN O'NEILL'S PROGRAM FREE FOR OG Nature groups, including the OG, are being offered free admission to the program by Dr. John O'Neill on December 1, 7:30 p.m. at the Houston Museum of Natural History. The museum will be closed except for this program, so there will be no museum admission fee either. In addition to this program, in which Dr. O'Neill will be taking a bird painting from idea to finish, there is an exhibition of 19 of his paintings on the mezzanine. These paintings can be viewed on the evening of the program or at other times when the museum is open. The exhibit "Birds in Art," which offers 115 paintings by great bird artists from around the world, is open through January 1 as well. HOUSTON CHRISTMAS COUNT WANTS YOU!!! It's time to make plans. Spend a day birding Saturday, December 16. Early indications are pointing to a banner year for sparrows, raptors and we'll see what else; The continued drought in West and South Texas may push a dramatic number of western visitors into the UTC area. One of our area leaders will be most happy to find just the right place for you. Please call and make arrangements.
