Dr. Richard Zingula will present "The Gulf of Mexico's Flower Gardens." Saturday, Dec. 3: Ornithology Group field trip. Owling is great at Brazos Bend State Park, and that's where our December field trip will be (moved from its original date of November 26). The good news for all you late sleepers is that we'll begin at noon. Meet at the convenience store just 200 or so yards north of the park entrance. Birding will begin on some roads near the park and move into the park in mid- afternoon. Bring a picnic supper to eat between 4:00 and 5:00 p.m. Owling will begin from the Elm Lake picnic area promptly at 5:00. We'll finish before closing time, but you're welcome to camp if you wish. For more information call Don and Lee Richardson at 661-1365. THE CHICKADEE TEMPORARY LOCATION The Chickadee is operating at a temporary location while the E. L. Moore Cabin is being renovated. To get your birding books and supplies, Christmas cards, etc. you can find the Chickadee in the Katy Shopping Center, on the access road of 1-10 (Katy Freeway), south of the freeway and just east of Brittmoore. A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN I hope everyone was able to get out during October to enjoy the fall migration. Although it doesn't have the numbers seen in spring, a look at the UTC Checklist shows that October is one of the very best months to hit coastal birding hot spots. The 1988-89 Federal Migratory Waterfowl or "Duck" stamp is now on sale at most post offices. The proceeds from the sale of this stamp are used by the USFWS to purchase habitat in waterfowl nesting areas. Duck hunters must buy duck stamps as part of their hunting permits. Others who love the outdoors should buy them for several reasons: it helps acquire habitat used not only by waterfowl but by other forms of wildlife as well; it lets non- hunters put their money where their mouths are; and a mint condition stamp would appreciate in value for stamp collectors. A duck stamp costs $10, that's about the cost of two cups of coffee a month for a year. Texas also has a state duck stamp and a non-game conservation stamp. Keep those aluminum cans coming in. (Remember, Pepsi cans aren't aluminum.) 1988 CHRISTMAS COUNT DATES Information on the following Christmas Counts has been submitted.
