TREE-PLANTING IN GALVESTON STATE PARK 30 a.m. led by Saturday, January 14, 9; David Marrack Think how fine it would be to have a large wooded area in the middle of Galveston State Park. What a great birding spot that would be! Several years ago David Marrack began planting trees near the nature trail in the park. Those trees are now beginning to grow, and quite a few migrants can already be found among them. We need to continue this project, to add more trees and to clear around the ones already there. We deplore the development of Galveston Island that continues to deplete the island, but here is a positive contribution we can make. We will meet Saturday, January 14 at 9:30 a.m. at the head of the nature trail in the west side of Galveston State Park. It is on a paved road and easy to find. Bring spades and shovels, also clippers. It is not necessary to bring trees, but if you have some, they should be no larger in diameter than your finger. Oaks and mulberries do well in Galveston and attract the birds. There are many other trees also that you might want to bring. We have set the time so you can do some birding before and after. Do come, and think how proud you'll be in future years when that lifer is sitting in your tree. |
