NOW—For Some More Feminist Space! by Wilma Scott Heide, President
Welcome to Houston, the site of NOW's Seventh National Conference.1 It is symbolic that
we meet in the area of the nation's ostensible space center to affirm with each other and proclaim to the world that You Can't Stop NOW from revolutionizing outer space, from redefining inner space and inter-space i.e. our humane interrelationships. This means: we can/will occupy any space we choose; we will move from adversarial relations to the maturity of mutual
inter-dependence. No institution of our society in or out of our homes will be deprived of the
radicalization of the feminism that is central to humanism. All institutions deserve and need
radical change; this only means we believe in getting to root causes of problems. In today's
still androcentric world, feminism is inherently radical.
As we meet, discuss, strategize, agree, disagree and sometimes agree to disagree, we strengthen our resolve, affirm our commitments and create our common humanity in our uncommon
venture. We are part of the cognitive minority who have the audacity to believe and know: our
lives can and do make a difference. History has ignored us; herstory discovers us; ourstory is
launching this nation into feminist space. This is the place, this is the time, we are the people
to vanguard the demise of the "femininity" game crippled by the destructive "masculinity"
game and create the humanity game. It's the only "game" in town—and the world—to liberate
women, men and children to create the space to be and become.
As your president nearly three years and Board Chairone one and a half years before that,
I am privileged to share, create, celebrate the values wherein the power of love can transcend
the love of power. We extend to each other our hands, our heads, our hearts and our love.
Of course: You Can't Stop NOW!

You Can't Stop NOW by Judy Lightfoot, Chairone of the Board
The theme of NOW's Seventh National Conference tells the tale of where our organization
stands and where it is going. Today, with tens of thousands of members and hundreds of chapters, after eight years of bringing our feminist revolution to the women of America, NOW is
unsinkable and unstoppable. Here, at our National Conference is the time for us to look back
at the victories we have achieved, and to examine with pride the growth of the organization
that has been responsible for our success. It's the time for us to look forward to, and plan,
our future victories and our organization's strength, which will continue to increase as we
continue to succeed.
We will not only finally ratify the ERA—we will insist and ensure that is implemented. We
will not only retain the legal right to choose whether or not to bear children—we will insist
and ensure that every women is able to freely exercise that choice. We will not only gain more
and better jobs for more women—we will insist and ensure that all employers comply with the
laws of the land. We will continue to work not only in our traditional fields, but we will expand our activities and show our organization's strength in new priorities. All this, and more,
will be effected as we continue to grow, not only expanding our membership to all women,
but defeating all attempts to divide us by race, religion, age or lifestyle. With this conference,
at this moment in NOW's glorious history, our theme tells it like it is. Truly, YOU CAN'T
