Transcript And, finally, goal of all writers1 goals (especially so far as financial rewards are concerned), there is the best-selling fantasy novel (science fiction, sword-and- sorcery, and perhaps especially supernatural horror involving a barely nubile girl) which In turn becomes a hit motion picture. Here the zeal to go beyond all bounds, adding in any showy idea that might increase saleability, is certainly understandable, though the result even in the best of cases (still, to my mind, The Exorcist) is questionable: a mixture of very fine special effects (the opposition in the prologue of van Sydow's moving, humane face and the T^/ck sun-set face of evil, the New York slums and subway, the child's aloneness in the chill, whispering room) with such dubious items as blatant ceiling-high levitation and regurgitated pea soup. Here it is up to the integrity of the weird writer to see to it that such doubtful successess do not in turn infect/ or re-infect the entire realm of weird fiction. - Fritz Leiber General Information: 1. There is a shuttle service from the Dallas-Ft0 Worth airport to the Sheraton Hotel. The current price for this service is $^.00. 2. Convention registration will start at approximately noon on Friday the 13th. We'll try to have enough staff on duty that this will be no hassle. 3- Liquor laws in Texas say you have to be 18 or over to buy alcohol. Liquor stores close at nine in the evening and do not open at all on Sundays. ^. This is Texas. People who abuse drugs are tortured to death here« It would be well to bear this in mind. 5. Weather in Texas in October is completely "unpredictable. Generally it's one of our most pleasant months, but out-of-state attendees are urged to check a national weather report before embarking. 6. Dealer's Room security will be strictly enforced. The same goes for the art show- and displays. You understand as well as we do why this is necessary. 7. Thanks tremendously for your advance support of WFG IV. We look forward to seeing you in October. *
