Transcript -4- FRIDAY, MARCH 23, 1984 9: 15-11:00am MASTER OF THE WORLD MASTER OF THE WORLD (Color) USA 1961 Directed by William Witney With Vincent Price, Charles Bronson, Henry Hull, Mary Webster, David Frankham One man tries to put a stop to warfare in this delightful fantasy- adventure adapted from Jules Verne's stories "Robur The Conqueror" and "Master Of The World." Vincent Price is Robur, a brilliant scientist who has created a giant airship called the Albatross. As the story is set in a period when air travel was in its infancy and baloons were considered the only method of flight at the time, there is a charming period atmosphere prevailing. Charles Bronson is the government agent who, along with three others, becomes a "guest" of the dedicated Robur, who intends to use his aircraft and its unique weapons to stop warfare among nations ... even if he has to use the very force he abhores to accomplish this end1 Humor, drama and fantasy are combined with a solid musical scoreandexcellentpprformances(especially by Price and Henry Hull as the anti-ware Robur and the eccentric munitions maker, respectively) helping to make this an entertaining adventure for everyone. Winner of the Parents' Magazine Special Merit Award. 3:15-5:00pm THE AMAZING MR. BLUNDEN (Color) Great Britain 1972 Directed and Written by Lionel Jeffries With Laurence Naismith, Lynne Frederick, Garry Miller, Rosalyn Landor, Marc Granger, Diana Dors A charming, suspenseful and often fascinating family film that has at its heart one of the more neglected, genres of the supernatural film; the ghost story. Jamie and Lucy live with their widowed mother in a dingy flat in London during the year 1918. One day, a mysterious stranger named Mr. Blunden enters their lives and arranges for the children's mother to become the caretaker of Langley Park, a long disused mansion. There, the children encounter the spirits of two orphaned children (Sarah and Georgie) who have traveled through time to seek help. Jamie and Lucy soon find themselves transported back to 1818, where Sarah and Georgie are at the mercy of their evil in-laws, Mr. and Mrs. Wickens, whose daughter is married to the children's uncle (their only living relative). Needless to say, there's dirty work afoot as the Wickenses begin plans to do in Sarah and Georgie. Only Jamie and Lucy, a family servant and the mysterious (and amazing) Mr. Blunden are able to offer any hope to the endangered children. The film's conclusion is in the best last-minute-rescue tradition.. .and there are several surprises at its ending as the truth about Mr. Blunden is revealed and we learn why Jamie and Lucy were sought out for assistance. Lionel Jeffries, the noted British character actor (whose work in such films as FIRST MEN IN THE MOON and TWO-WAY STRETCH has been acclaimed), makes a smooth and skillful transition to writer and director in this motion picture that is bound by an aura of period charm. In his book, A Heritage of Horror: The English Gothic Cinema (1*946-1972), David Pirie remarked, "This remarkable and unexpectedly disturbing film is one of the very few serious cinematic attempts to recreate the world of the Victorian ghost story. The subtle performances of the children, the plot's complexity and Lionel Jeffries' enormous talent for establishing atmosphere and period certainly place it among the most important supernatural movies ever made in England." 11 : 1 5-1 : 00pm Transatlantic Tunnel ELECTRONIC LABYRINTH (Color) 1967 In the computer world of the future, a man, titled 1138, enters a nightmare world as he attempts to escape the mind of the computer constantly tracking his movements. Formerly titled "THX 1138 4EB". l:15-3:00pm THE GOLEM (Silent) 1920 Paul Wegener, Albert Steinruck, Ernst Deutsch, Lyda Sal- monova. Directed by Paul Wegener, Carl Boese. One of the classic 'monster' films made in Germany by Paul Wegener, who portrayed the legendary creature of Jewish folklore three times. A prototype of the Frankenstein-type monsters, the Golem is a gigantic being brought to life by Rabbi Loew to protect, and avenge, the people in the ghetto of Prague from persecution. 5:15-7:00pm THE GREAT RUPERT USA 1950 Directed by Irving Pichel With Jimmy Durante, Terry Moore, Tom Drake, Queenie Smith, Chick Chandler George Pal's first feature production stars the great "Schnozzola" in a charming comedy touched by that George Pal magic. Durante almost meets his match when he (an unemployed vaudevillian) and his family move into an apartment. Things suddenly get a bit out of hand when they literally find it raining money! Their unknown benefactor is Rupert, asquirrelwhohasbeenlivinginsidethewalls of the place and has been shoving a hidden cash horde out of his home.
