Transcript AN ORDINANCE To Provide for Standpipes and Fire Escapes on Buildings. Be it ordained by the City Council of the City of Houston : Section 1. All buildings except such as are used for private residences . exclusively in the City of Houston, of three or more stories in height, shall be provided with one or more metallic ladders or metallic fire escapes extending from the first story to the upper stories of such building and above the roof on the outter walls thereof, in such location and number and of such material and constructed as the City Engineer and Chief of the Fire Department of the said City of Houston may from time to time direct. After such determination shall have been made as aforesaid, the said City Engineer may at any time, by a notice in writing served upon the owner, agent, lessee or occupant of any such building, by leaving with such owner, agent, lessee or occupant, or at his, her or their residence or place of business, a copy of such notice, require such agent, owner, lessee or occupant, or either of them, to cause such metallic ladder or fire escape, or ladders or fire escapes, to be placed upon such buildings within thirty days after the service of such notice; provided, however, that all buildings more than two stories in height used for manufacturing purposes shall have one metallic ladder for every twenty-five persons or less employed above the second story, and tht*t at each story the said fire escape shall have a landing four by six feet. Sec. 2. All public halls with accommodations for five hundred or more persons shall have at least one standpipe in the street or alley on the outside of the building from ground to roof, with hose attachments close to a window or door at each floor or gallery. Sec. 3. In case the owner, lessee or occupant, or either of them, so served with notice as aforesaid, shall not within thirty days after the service upon him or them, place or cause to be placed such metallic ladder, fire escape or standpipe upon such building as required by this article and the terms of such notice, he or tli6y shall be subject to a fine of not less than ten or more than two hundred dollars, and for each week of such neglect to comply with such notice after the service of the same, such owner or lessee shall be deemed to have violated this ordinance and shall be fined for such violation as above provided. Sec. 4. All ordinances not in conformance with the above are hereby repealed. 8kc. 5. This ordinance to take effect from and after its passage.
