As 1999 Student Association President, Cassidy has taken charge in leading students to lobby for changes in administrative policies and regulations. A native Houstonian, 24-year-old Cassidy graduated from high school and enrolled at Steven F. Austin University as a business major where he attended for a year. However, not being able to afford the high joining fee of the fraternities, Cassidy decided to transfer to the University of Houston where he is now a member of Phi Kappa Theta and a sports administration major. Cassidy admits he also transferred to UH because he missed Houston. "I always liked being in the big city," he said. Since transferring to UH, Cassidy changed his major to sports administration after working at a 24 Hour Fitness as a personal fitness trainer. Discovering he was interested in how the human body works, Cassidy decided to change his major to sports administration. A major Cassidy refers to as a happy medium. In addition to changing his major, Cassidy decided to become more involved serving with many organizations. He has worked with the Student Program Board in organizing the Speaker's Forum and has helped with Homecoming activities and Frontier Fiesta. In Cassidy's mind his greatest achievement has been serving as SA president. When helping to organize homecoming one year Cassidy said the SA president at the time came up to him and asked him if he would be interested in working with SA. After joining, Cassidy worked his way up serving as student regent, vice president and then SA president. Cassidy remembers how special he felt at the inauguration. "It was a cool moment when I was inaugurated," he said. "My parents, friends and fraternity brothers were all there to support me." While Cassidy's term ended in the Spring, he has learned many valuable skills. He has improved his public speaking skills and learned how to deal with people. "(In SA) are dealing with a lot of people," he said. "You have to deal with them on an individual basis." Cassidy also feels he has strengthened his leadership skills and will be able to use them once he graduates in sports administration. • by Michelle Norton Tom Cassidyfe term as Student Association president brought sweeping reform and administrative change for UN students, faculty and staff.
