Houston celebrated St. Patrick's Day with a traditional parade downtown. The parade consisted of floats decorated with green garland and shimmering shamrocks. Houstonians atop the parade floats weren't necessarily Irish, but they dressed in green and celebrated the day. One of the all-time unforgettable Houston St. Patrick's Day traditions is the turning of the Buffalo Bayou green. Hundreds of Houstonians make their way to the Buffalo Bayou to watch as it is colored with green dye. The bayou runs green all through St. Patrick's Day and it is a wonderful sight for all to see. St. Patrick's day in Houston is a weekend long celebration. That weekend, the Heights neighborhood holds its annual St. Patrick's Day festival. Irish bands and dancers come from all over to perform at the festival. There are also a handful of vendors in which visitors can purchase authentic Irish jewelry, blankets, etc. Food was also a big part of the festival. Meat pies, roasted corn, sausage and many more scrumptious foods helped to make the festival very enjoyable. Another intriguing part of St. Patrick's Day is the variety of costumes and characters that people parade around as to get into the spirit. It's the one time you can see a leprechaun, or at least someone dressed as one of the little people. St. Patrick's Day is a wonderful tradition that will continue, because whether they're Irish or not, Houstonians love the festivities. • by Linda Canales & PatUeh'i Pag FatH Wearing green on St. Patrick's Day is a U.S. custom. The color green is actually unpopular in Ireland due to the fact that green is associated with the old green flag and that was a time when Ireland was not free. st. Patrick's day • 295
