Houstonians are some of the nicest and most caring people around and if any proof is needed just look at what Houstonians do to help out their city and community. One of the organizations that Houston can be proud of is Serve Houston Youth Corps. More than 525 youths have helped the Houston community through public service with the help of the program. Youths gain valuable experience that they can later give back to the community and the volunteers that give their time working with the youths also help to make a difference. Another service group that does the Bayou City proud is Abilities Exchange. Abilities Exchange is an organization operated by people with disabilities for people with disabilities. Volunteers share their talents and skills with each other and help each other out which is what a community is all about. The Houston Area Women's Center is a volunteer organization that provides support for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. There 759 volunteers at the center and they put in a total of 30, 510 hours in an effort to help Houston women and children become survivors. Another important volunteer group is the Assistance League of Houston, a member of the National Assistance League, which has worked thousands of hours and has invested financial aid in order to help improve the quality of life for men, women and children of Houston. There are hundreds of volunteer groups in Houston with the overall purpose of helping Houstonians lead better lives and live in a city where they know the community will band together if needed. • by Linda Canales Houkfcn, Coumuutg £ewice, Factk. In order to join the service organizations on campus students must accumulate more than 20 hours of community service. Many gain these hours by volunteering on campus at the Child Care Center or as orientation leaders.
