The Cougars ended their regular season campaign with an 8-12 record under first year tennis coach, Jennifer Hyde. The team never put together a consistent streak during the course of the season, but in Hyde's first year as the Cougars' head coach, she was able to improve the team, which showed signs of brilliance throughout the course of the year. Youth and inexperience proved to be the Cougars' weakness in 2000. But with a young nucleus, Hyde should be able to point the Cougars forward. Progress seems to be the only thing this squad can do. Galina Seliounina and Mette Sigmundstad, who led Houston in doubles play at the number one position throughout the season, ended their collegiate careers this year. Their leadership proved to be the key in developing the skills and confidence in such young players like Jen Baccarni, Kailey Meisinger, Anne Rapp and Karine Urbin. Together, Seliounina and Sigmundstad compiled a 14-3 record as a duo. "Galina and Mette meant a lot to this team," Hyde said. "Their leadership will surely be missed. I wish them the best." The Cougars' season was made of streaks. However, the losing streaks outweighed the winning streaks as an 8-12 record was credited to an early six-match skid in February. Big wins over UTEP, Oklahoma and Rice appeared to turn things around, but UH was unable to maintain its intensity down the stretch. • by Jason Caesar Consolacion Mette Sigmundstad helped the Cougars to a superb record.
