Transcript 7fviiH9HiilyS^%% Purity Breaking Records in Swimming and Diving The challenge of the sport of diving is to enter the water with as little splash as possible. UH senior diver Yolanda Hernandez-Casas did just the opposite, she made a huge splash by leading the Cougar swimming/diving team to postseason glory. She qualified early for the postseason. She was guaranteed a spot in the NCAA Zone Championships after just the first meet Oct. 29 against Louisiana State and University of Louisiana-Monroe. Hernandez-Casas' third place performance in the NCAA Zone "D" Diving Championships on March 30-31 earned her the opportunity to compete in the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis. She finished the competition with 441.85 in the three-meter springboard competition, where she finished 24th. Hernandez-Casas also ended her stellar career at UH with a 31st-place finish in the one meter with a score of 341.30. The native Mexican had to follow the tough act of former Cougar All- American honorable mention Noel Lewandowski, whom she will probably compete against in this summer's Olympics in Sydney. While many on the swimming and diving team showed great talent this season, Hernandez- Casas proved to be the team member with the most energy and enthusiasm for the sport. Many in the UH community are looking forward to watching her diving career take off. With the pressures of classes and other activities it is often difficult for student athletes to maintain a strong enthusiasm for the game. However, in Hernandez-Casas' case, she has great enthusiasm. • by Keenan Singleton Photo by Danny Nguyen UH swim team members prepare with University of Texas swim team members for the freestyle meet.
