Photo by Kevin Harwerth Cougars make a comeback in the 1999 season with a great team under great leadership Angela Curl has grown up around basketball and wouldn't have it any other way. She has never been coached directly by her father, UH women's basketball coach Joe Curl, until her freshman year in college. "I've been around basketball all my life since my dad was a coach. He never pressured me. He always said, 'If you don't want to play don't play,' but it was always something I wanted to do." Curl spent her high school athletic career in Brenham, Texas, where she lettered in basketball and averaged 20 points per game. She was named Newcomer of the Year, First Team All-District and averaged 10 rebounds a game. The sophomore graduated in the top 10 percent of her class and was a member of the National Honor Society. Curl originally signed with the University of Missouri, but when the coach retired, she decided to become a Cougar. As a freshman, Curl was an offensive power house shooting 45.9 percent of the UH three-pointers last season, placing her third on the UH single-season list for scoring 57 three- point shots. She was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team. The sophomore has also taken part in a new online notebook this season in which she writes about the team and her own personal experiences. "A big part of our program is the community service and outreach type stuff," she said. "All the kids cheer in the stands whether we're winning or losing. It's fun because you know you're going to be a big part of their life." The future of women's basketball at UH has much to look forward to with recruits like Chandi Jones and Nicole Oliver. Curl has decided on a sports administration major. • by Nicole Jansen Cud oh Cud JOE CURL "^ela cud % Jj kcwe c\ cpecX tela* tiou$l\ip oh and o(( the court."
