Photo by Kevin Harwerth Joe Curl brings in valuable prospects as the Lady Cougars work towards rebuilding their program Photo by Kevin Harwerth The UH women's basketball team's season can be summed up in one word: interesting. Though its record may not show this, the Lady Cougars made great strides this season, turning to a new brand of basketball and adding new players to the mix. The nucleus is young, so next season promises to be better. After all, there really isn't any other direction the team can go after a 7- 21 season. But despite the poor record, head coach Joe Curl seems content with what lies ahead. "This season was a learning experience," he said. "These girls have a long way to go. We're really not losing anybody and we're gaining a lot more talent, so I'm looking forward to (next year)." The year started with three-straight losses, but a win over New Mexico proved to be an emotional boost for the Lady Cougars. However, it proved to be short lived as they rolled off four-straight losses before their next win. The season went up and down with losing streaks accompanying the occassional win. But what was gathered from the year was experience for young players like Monet Sykes, Cathy Lida and Shaunta Hart under the guidance of Angela Curl and ShaRonda Lasseter. "The new players played very well this season," Coach Curl said. "I'm very proud of their efforts. They really blended well with the veterans and that kind of chemistry is what needs to carry over to next year in order for us to be successful." "I think if we pull together as a team and realize that everything we do on the court is a team effort, we can be a great team," Lida said. "This season wasn't a disappointment. It was a learning experience." • by Linda Canales 232 SPORTS WOlhEri'S BASKETBALL • 233
