Transcript Freshman George Williams puts the exclamation point on a fierce slam against Valporaiso. Photo by Kevin Harwerth puhpk fykiok Junior college transfer Calvin Murphy Jr. earned a back-up spot on this year's roster. Photo by Kevin Harwerth Freshman Marcus Oliver earned a starting role on Coach Drexler's squad. Photo by Pin Lim 1999's recruits showed positive signs of what the future holds for the men's basketball program It was head coach Clyde Drexler's first full recruiting class. Two freshman and one junior college transfer made up the pack. What an exciting pack it was. Calvin Murphy Jr. signed on with the Cougars after Drexler caught a glimpse of some video. "He's a true point guard," Drexler said. "He's one of the best passers on the team and he shoots the ball very well." The point guard showed signs of his Hall of Fame father, streaking through the court, making crisp passes and flaunting his sharp shooting skills. Marcus Oliver, a freshman from North Carolina, started eight games for the Cougars, including five in a row in January when UH went 2-3. "Marcus Oliver is one of the most athletic players I've ever seen," UH assistant coach Reid Gettys said. "He can take his defender one on one, and he can shoot the ball from anywhere on the floor." Oliver scored a season- high 13 points on two occassions and 12 points in three other games. Playing alongside Gee Gervin gave Oliver quite a freshman experience. Finally, George Williams, the freshman from nearby Elkins High School, became a star this season. He was one of the best freshman in Conference USA this year. Williams averaged 14.3 points (second on the team) and 8.5 rebounds (leading the team) in his first season. "George can do it all," Drexler said. "He can handle the ball very well for his size, he can shoot very well and he plays great defense. He's a great all-around player." All three newcomers certainly brought promise to the future of UH basketball. • by Jason Caesar Consolacion GEORGE WILLIAMS #42 Forward 6-8, Freshman-HS Sugar Land Elkins High School GP FG-PCT. REB.
