Transcript faking the cdt Clyde Drexler had a tough second season as the Cougars' head coach, eventually leading to his departure. ltUin(j kLjk UH's Gee Gervin, an all-conference selection, could only watch in agony from the bench as the Cougars ended the season with an 11-game losing streak. Photo by Kevin Harwerth Ending the season with an I I-game losing streak gave the Cougars little hope in the C -USA Tournament The UH men's basketball season started out with promise (5-3 out of the gate), hit its low point toward the end of the year (11 straight losses) and ended with disbelief, as UH head coach Clyde Drexler announced his resignation. The ship began with a smooth sail at the Top of the World Classic in Fairbanks, Ala. The Cougars took the opener in convincing fashion, an 81-59 drubbing of host Alaska-Fairbanks and managed to come away with another win over a tough George Washington team. Things basically went downhill from there. The Cougars managed six more wins over the next 15 games, but that would be it for the remainder of the regular season. Two of the season's high points came when nationally ranked powerhouses Connecticut and Cincinnati walked through the doors of Hofheinz Pavilion. Dec. 30, the Huskies claimed a 48-27 halftime lead but the Cougars pulled close late in the game. UConn escaped with a six point win. Feb. 17 was quite similar; the Cougars closed to within seven points on two different occasions against No. 1 Cincinnati, but the Bearcats also managed to escape with a win, prevailing 77-65. Tulane ended UH's season March 8, a day after the Cougars won their first-ever C-USA Tournament game against Marquette, a 77-75 triumph. Two weeks after the final buzzer, head coach Drexler shocked the city with the announcement of his resignation. Three weeks would pass before the hiring of Ray McCallum from Ball State, UH's sixth head basketball coach, was announced. • by Jason Caesar Consolacion 220 SPORTS mEn's basketball • 221
