Michelle Denomme is one of these athletes. Her position requires the player to be skillful on mental and physical levels. The senior Denomme prides herself on her aggressiveness, timing and patience. "I like to think I'm patient," she said laughing. T think those are the three areas I like to focus on. I don't like to commit too early to the ball or the girl will go right around me, so I like to have patience." Denomme played and started all 19 games last season, totaled five shutouts and allowed only four goals during a nine- game winning streak. However, this season would be cut short. Denomme suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in UH's 5-1 win over Southern Mississippi on Oct. 3. The injury ended her season. She was hav- ng the season ing a stellar year before she went down, recording a 0.19 goals-against average while playing 479 minutes in the Cougars' 6- 0 conference start. "It's frustrating," Denomme said. "Being a senior you really don't want to go out like this, but now I have to be there for the team on the sidelines." The injury placed sophomore Susan Barra into the starter's role after serving as the backup for the past year and a half. "When a person is a leader and a role model on a team, it's really a shock when something like this happens," said Barra. "It hurt's everyone to see her hurt. But this is what I've been training for for over a year now. I'm definitely ready." Barra proved she was ready, going 3-1-1 in the season's remaining games.
