The Catholic Newman Center is a home away Irom home lor many students at UH Among the many buildings on the campus of the University of Houston, there is one that seems to uniquely stand apart from the rest. From its red and white banners that drape the outside walls to the warm greetings from people inside, the Catholic Newman Center represents a place of unity and comfort. Founded by the Catholic Newman Association in 1968 and named after Cardinal Newman, who is the patron of Catholic Student Centers; the Catholic Newman Center represents Catholic beliefs and ideologies within a public campus. From the various events like Welcome Weekend at the beginning of the semester to potluck dinner at Thanksgiving, the Newman Center relays the message that its doors are always open and everyone is welcome to enter. Though its main purpose is to serve as an institution of God's work, it is also, according to one of the parish priests Father Paul Gallagher, "A place of reflection and service for members within and out side the community." Not only is the Catholic Newman Center a place to gather and worship it is also viewed by many as a warm and safe home. Many students go to the center to study, chat with friends, meet for various organizations like the Justice Committee, Catholic Student Organization or partake in such events as the Rosary and Bible Study. For many international students like Merlyn D'Souza, the Catholic Center exists as a home away from home. She relays that the center "Is a rich and wonderful place filled with a strong sense of community." "I have learned so much from the people I have become acquainted with and it has made me miss my home in India a lot less," she said. As the years tend to come and go many members whether they are old or new, continue to visit the Catholic Newman Center. It has become a foundation of unity that helps to ensure the word of God is present in the lives of all his people. -by Josephine Rajadurai • f 8 L^Vr ":' 1 ty* "4 Justice committee volunteers for Habitat for Humanity in Tomball.
