The UH Chapter of the Golden Key National Honor Society has successfully inducted 491 members this year alone. "It's so diverse and dynamic, everything changes so often, it's definitely not static," said Golden Key President, Yvette Brawner. To become a part of this prestigious society, a student must be in the top 15% of their junior or senior level classes, with a cumulative GPA of 3.3. Transfer student must have similar requirements in addition to 25 semester hours at the school of transfer. The UH chapter was founded on April 29, 1979 and has endured ever since. "It's all majors, we don't discriminate. We cater to all and there are no dues, plus service is voluntary. This is a student- based organization and once you're in, you're in for life," said Steven Garcia, vice-president of Internal Affairs. Golden Key members not only strive for academic excellence, but also serve the community as well. Several of their service projects include Best of America, The Urban Project, which is an umbrella organization for Habitat for Humanity, in which Golden Key provided manpower to paint homes on Martin Luther King and Old Spanish Trail streets. Golden Key members also took time out from studies of their own to read to the Bastian Elementary School children located on Cullen street. Plus a blood drive in collaboration with NAACP. Furthermore, they also offer economic assistance to their members through competitive scholarships. A newly inducted junior or senior with the highest GPA and number of community service hours are granted a $1000 scholarship. Other scholarship opportunities include the Literary Performance Scholarship, among several. Golden Key has come a long way and it will continue to grow and promote academic excellence. • by Donica Beckett JOIN US Golden Key members try to recruit for their organization.
