Transcript JOCtl TA Food and entertainment made Frontier Fiesta 2000 a hit with UH and Houstonians DIXIE CHICKS Three Frontier Fiesta volunteers sing a country song for the crowd. Entertainment at the main stage included Rick Trevino and Norteno band Intenso, both of which were sponsored by the Student Program Board. Back to the City Cafe, which was run by the Saltgrass Steak House, visitors were able to purchase some hearty meals. Along with the City Cafe there were tents to house the Alumni Cookoff. Twenty-one teams entered the cookoff and competed in several categories. Students and Fiesta-goers had plenty of flavorable foods to choose from between the City Cafe and Alumni Cookoff and various stands around the fiesta. One of the main attractions at Frontier Fiesta are the variety shows that various fraternities and sororities put on. The groups practiced for weeks to get their routines down and then showed their stuff to win prizes. There were various categories for the groups to compete in, but the overall idea was for everyone to get involved with Frontier Fiesta and have fun in the process. And it looks like everyone did just that. There was more to Frontier Fiesta this year than food and variety shows. There was a mechanical bull in which Fiesta-goers could try their luck and put their imaginations to the test as they were thrown to and fro by the realistic bull. There was a dunking booth, which wasn't uncommon in the old west during carnivals and such. It's not always a pleasant experience for the person being dunk, but it's a fun experience for all those on the outside. For those who weren't quite into the old west theme of Frontier Fiesta there was laser tag. Something to note about this year's Frontier Fiesta is the fact that scholarships will be set up for incoming freshmen with part of the money raised from the fiesta. Frontier Fiesta is a UH tradition that students and the Houston community treasure. It will always remain a part of the University of Houston tradition. 1 by Linda Canales PITS O'PLENTY Bar-B-Q was the food of choice for many Frontier Fiesta visitors.
