The UH Shotokan Karate Club has been around for 21 years and for the students and faculty that have discovered this unique group, it has been one of the best experiences at UH. Shotokan is open to everyone at UH no matter what race, age, gender or experience and the cost is minimal compared to other groups on campus. Sensei Deddy Mansyur founded the organization in 1987. Mansyur received his black belt from Sensei Muchsin in 1976 and is now the chief instructor of Shotokan Karate. Shotokan's purpose is educate the community in ways to combat violence, teach self-defense techniques, improve physical, mental and spiritual health, build self- esteem, strengthen self-confidence, promote love and respect for each other and leam ways to live peacefully. Since it's existence Shotokan Karate has produced some of the state's best karate champions. This year the club competed in the 1999 National USANKF Karate Championships in West Virginia. Mansyur placed second in Kata for 40 year olds and older and Adeboye Osinulu, an engineering major at UH, placed third in the Kumite division. Of course, the club was just warming up in the fall, because when spring arrived, the UH Shotokan Karate members made their presence known at the USA National Karate Federation Texas State Karate Championship 2000. Mansyur took first place in Senior Black Belt Division and Osinulu took first in Kumite in the Adult Brown Belt Division. Krassimir "Chris" Doynof took second place in Kata, while Robin Ciresi took second in Kata. Thomas Pineda, a freshman, took second in the Brown Belt Adult Division and Sempai Joe McDermott took second in Kata in the Adult Male Division. Along with competitions, the team also holds clinics for area karate clubs where they help to reintroduce practitioners to what it the true art of karate exercises and methods. They also offer self-defense training to the community. The UH SHotokan Karate Club has created an environment that welcomes everyone and it is because of their promotion of love and respect for one another that they will continue to flourish atUH. • by Linda Canales TURN TO THE LEFT Carter White, a UH law student, demonstrates his fighting stance.
