Photo Courtesy of GLOBAL GLOBAL is a support, social, educational and political group for the University of Houston's gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community and its allies. GLOBAL strives to educate and be a resource to the UH community on gay issues and to provide a welcoming atmosphere for all at University of Houston. "GLOBAL at UH has about 50 members," said president Sandy Rodrigo Lopez. "We are involved in all kinds of events, like Gay Awareness Week, a luncheon where we go out into the community and share our experiences with gay youth." "It's a big transition from high school to college so we want to make sure they understand what it is like being gay at the college level," added Lopez. GLOBAL is also involved with the gay pride parade. Brian Tucker the chairman of the Global committee for the Houston Pride Parade, affirms GLOBALS's involvement in the parade which takes place this June. "We are definitely going to be there. I am in charge of a committee and we are making preparations for it, such as designing a float," Tucker said. Some of the GLOBAL goals for the year are to increase growth in membership and to develop a unique relationship with the school by increasing awareness of gays on campus. Most importantly, the goals for the year is to stick to the motto "GLOBAL: being yourself, accepting gays, creating change." Whatever the case may be, GLOBAL is one of the most active gay campus organizations in the South and is diverse in its ethnic, racial, religious and political makeup. They welcome students from other area colleges or junior colleges who do not have the support and resources that UH and GLOBAL do. In addition, GLOBAL provides educational outreach programs for the entire UH and greater Houston community. Whether you are struggling to come out or a hard-core gay rights activist, GLOBAL is the place for you.
