Courtesy of Julie Browning In Alpha Chi Omega, there is a unique sisterhood where one can find true friends for life. "I went through formal recruitment in the Fall of '97, so I had a chance to meet every sorority. I loved Alpha Chi Omega from the very first day because the girls were so down to earth," said Julie Browning, president. In the Fall of 1999, Alpha Chi welcomed 15 new members and initiated 7 new members in the Spring of 2000. "Being in a sorority is a great way to get involved at UH and meet people! Through AXO, I've met UH alumni and made lifetime memories that would not have been possible had I not gotten involved," said Browning. Alpha Chi Omega has many annual fundraisers to support community projects and its philanthropy. The Mr. AXO Pageant raised more than $2,000 for the Houston Area Women's Center and The Alpha Chi Omega Foundation. Alpha Chi Omega Hugs & Pampers Children of Domestic Violence campaign is a statewide diaper drive held in February by all Texas Alpha Chi Omega chapters. All donated diapers are given to the Houston Area Women's Center. The UH chapter received 60 packages of diapers. Alpha Chi supports the Greek system as a whole by participating in Greek activities such as Anchor Splash, Pushball, Greek Feud and many others. During Greek Week, Alpha Chi won third place overall in the competition. "Being an Alpha Chi means supporting your sisters, having fun, getting involved at UH, and respecting yourself," Browning said. Alpha Chi is represented all over the UH campus. Two members, Julie Browning and Julie Fischer, were 1999 Homecoming Queen semi- finalists. In the spring during Frontier Fiesta, Alpha Chi, participating with Sigma Nu, won the award for Best Costumes, two top 10 acts and the award for Best Sportsmanship. "With the support of my sisters, I've grown into a mature, outgoing, strong woman. I encourage everyone to go through rush, and find a place where they feel at home," Browning said. ■ by Jennifer Herrin^ton Alpha Chi Omega sisters and friends get back into the swing of things with a Back To School Picnic.
