Transcript GIRLS'CLUB Ladies who want to experience sorority life must first gp tjrough a rush process where they meet various members of UH sororities. FUN TIMES Recruiting Greek members was fun for leaders and potential recruits as well. Photo hy Kevin Harwerth Socid FRATERNITIES & SORORTIES Paving the way tor future generations of friendship and education at the University of Houston. There has always been a lot of bad publicity surrounding sororities and fraternities, but at the University of Houston the Greek system has change all that. For many freshmen and transfer students starting out at the University can be a lonely experience, but many are finding that by joining a fraternity or sorority they are involved in all aspects of college life. Members of the social sororities and fraternities make contacts through alumni that will help give them an advantage in the competition for jobs. Students also experience what it's like to give something back to the community and the less fortunate. Since most fraternities and sororities are associated with a philanthropy, members learn to help others and to be thankful for what they have. There are can food drives throughout the year around UH, most of which are sponsored by sororities and fraternities. Many have fundraisers for their various charities, such as the Children's Miracle Network. Others give back by actually doing physical labor with such groups as Habitat for Humanity, which builds homes for the less fortunate. Of course, a social sorority and fraternity have to do some socializing. Many have various parties, games, retreats and banquets to build up their sisterhood and brotherhood. There is a stereotype that hazing is constantly going on with social sororities and fraternities, but in actually, most are just having a safe and good time. Joining a sorority or fraternity is about the friendships that are made, many which last longer than friendships made outside of the Greek system because of the strong bond that is formed in the very beginning of Rush. Going Greek is more than wearing greek letters on colorful t-shirts or throwing annual parties and banquets. Going Greek is about the strong bonds of friendship found in sisterhood and brotherhood and it's about getting more involved with the University and taking a step toward the real world. • by Micbelle Norton DISHING DIRT Part of the Rush experience is participating various ice-breakers.
