"We are an information source between the students and professionals," President of Allied Society Joey Hurt said. For example, Allied Health Professional Society promoted the University of Texas Health Science Research Center. "It is for students, and they get to work one-on-one with a doctor. They get to write an abstract and get published in the University of Texas Medical Journal," Hurt said. "It is very intense. Students work for 40 hours a week just like a real job," Hurt said. Allied Health Professional Society has a guest speaker that talks about different issues the first and third Tuesday of the month. The members of Allied Health Professional Society are involved in the communi- ty-„ "A number of our students volunteer in the field that they are trying to get into," Hurt said. "One of our members has been volunteering at the Texas Children Hospital for two years." She added that one of her best experiences with the organization was going to the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. "We got to see where we will be studying. It gave us a feeling for what we need to prepare for." MINGLING Students mingle before a AHPS meeting at the UC Photo hy Travis Howell 142 • ORGAniZATlOnS ALLIED HEALTH PROFESSIOnAL SOCIETY • 143
