UH cheerleaders practice their gymnastics for a new routine Photo hy Max Lacayo At the University of Houston, school spirit has not always been a priority for students, but the 1999-2000 UH cheerleaders have worked to make it one. The UH cheerleaders are made up of two squads, each with the responsibility of promoting school spirit and getting students more involved at games and UH functions. The first squad is co-ed and members for that squad are chosen every spring. Anyone who is at least a high school graduate or transfer student that has been accepted can try out. During the summer, the squad goes to a summer camp where it represents UH by competing against other teams. The cheerleaders learn a variety of routines to bring back and perform for the UH fans. The co-ed squad also performs at football games, men's basketball games and any national competitions. The squad also represents UH at any other events that the University holds. The second squad is an all- women's team whose mem- 134 • ORGAniZATioriS bers are chosen in the fall, unlike the co-ed squad. The women's squad gets to cheer at the football games as well, but they also cheer at women's basketball and women's volleyball. The squad also participates in events with the co-ed squad throughout the year. For the men and women who are members of the UH cheerleading squad, it's more than just an extracurricular activity. The members of the cheerleading squad must be able to keep up with their studies and keep themselves in good physical shape. There's also a lot of dedication involved with the cheerleading program at UH. Members have to attend classes, practices, games and events and still make time to have a personal live. The UH cheerleaders worked hard this year to make all the games and special UH events memorable for everyone, and they will continue to promote school spirit and UH pride.
