Photo Courtesy of La Comunidad 'Honor in what we believe in, pride in what we do, unity and strength amongst us all' is the creed of the nonprofit service organization La Comunidad. "The sole purpose of this group is to lend a helping hand to the Hispanic community, but we are not limited to it," La Comunidad President Rebecca Garcia said. "We help those who need it the most." La Comunidad has had an eventful year because of their participation in a multitude of activities that directly involve the community. La Comunidad members made Thanksgiving memorable for some Houston-area families. They acquired names from the Houston Food Bank and contracted major grocery chains such as Fiesta and Kroger for turkeys. Members provided the trimmings and together they delivered hot meals to several families. Along with catering to the needs of the family, La 124 • ©RGAnizATions Comunidad also caters to the needs of the children. This year the group cleaned neighborhood parks, tutored students enrolled in afternoon reading programs and sponsored a Christmas party for the Houston Children's Museum. The organization also implements leadership. Any student interested in joining must complete a service project that they have planned. The goal is to make the student learn the value of commitment and responsibility. A skills which would help them in their aim for successful careers in the future. Garcia clarified that La Comunidad would be the ideal organization for a student to join if they are interested in honing their leadership abilities, helping the community and making lasting friendships. Many students have found the organization to be beneficial to themselves and to others as well. • by Aceila Taylor Photo Courtesy of La Comunidad Treasurer Sophia Napolez, Member Johanna Jimenez and Historian Nelly Gutierrez sit at a booth for recuitment day.
