Paige also received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from the University at the ceremony. Another special guest of the 2000 commencement was Dr. Irvin M. Borish who also received an honorary degree. Borish was a member of the UH faculty until 1987, when he retired and he has called "the father of modern optometry". The student speaker for this year was Deveryle James who delivered a speech called "The Power to Liberate." James entered an essay competition with other graduates with 3.5 GPAs or higher. "Being in school and having an education is the best thing for anyone," Ismail Elabdallah said, "Education is better than anything in the world."
