"It has been very rewarding for me to be part of a system that changes peoples' lives," Veterans Services Program Coordinator Bill Smiley said. At the University of Houston students take the time to give back to the community by participating in various community service projects. "The best part is making a difference. A lot of people have a desire to Metropolitan Volunteer Program at UH. MVP is one of many groups on the UH campus whose purpose is to serve the community. Some groups on campus, such as the Society of Women Engineers, are not service organizations, but they still take the time to help out the community. The big question is why do these students take the time out of their busy schedules to help people they don't even know? "My background is the kind that helped me to see that life is not a bed of roses. It has also helped me to understand that there are other people out there who need the help," Ify Okpalagu, a member of MVP said. Okpalagu now does everything she can when she can to help out others. It is because of UH students like Okpalagu organizations like make a difference in peo- of gathering enough toys to give to needy children at Christmas time.
