Transcript nvtoll cWtoUd Unity Spreads Across UHs Diverse Campus —,_ -^ idea of a ^~j/r^ diverse campus is vl/still somewhat unheard of on some college campuses, but at the University of Houston diversity is part of the college experience. "The stu- dent population is reflective of our community," the Executive Director of the Office of Affirmative Action Ileana V. Trevino said. For the 1999-2000 school year UH has enrolled a student population of 26 percent African American, 22 percent Hispanic, 11 percent Asian and 41 percent white. "Our minority student population is greater than the white student population," Trevino said. "So there's really a nice balance of diversity." Getting involved in student activities is a way to meet people of an ethic or cultural background different from your own. Even though UH faculty is not as diverse as its student population, it '^'lAJteASitty imp/tOAt&S/ oho/taclen' and ptepo/ies/ uo/w toy deu'l uritA the/ diffe/ienb people/ ij&w tun aoia&& in life'. "This is something that has been difficult to achieve in higher education, and some of the cultural and racial stereotypes among different cultures. "Diversity improves character and prepares you to deal with the different people you run across in life," communi- cations freshman Darius Davis said. There are a variety of ethnic organizations for minority students to choose from to express themselves culturally, such as Black Student Union, Chinese Students Association, Hispanic Students Association and the International Student Organization. "The University of Houston, in terms of the student population, is an example of diversity among public universi- the that is something that we're working hard at to ties in this country, and make a change." we're very proud of The diversity on that," Trevino said, campus is having a posi tive effect on the UH population, and it breaks Diversity on the UH campus is not ideal, it's a reality. • by Kevin Harris 'Gammon tanauaaej Senior biology major Mark Phu, junior fine arts major Terence Daniels and freshman computer science major Ray Kraesig discuss their classes.
