Transcript VARSITY SQUAD: Jerry Smartt, Charles Gary, Don Loadman, Mario Garcia, Reg Darley, John Gentempo. Back row: Earl Kaiser, Terry Long, Jack Smyth, Bobby Weise, Jack Parrington, Jack McRoberts. The second place Missouri Valley Conference track team under Coach Johnny Morriss left little depth for the 1958 season. Morriss found only a 12-man team for his first meet in Austin. A makeshift 440-yard relay team knocked off a fine 42.3 and Jerry Smartt paced a 9:35.2 two-mile to break triangular meet records with Texas and Texas A&M. Shot putter Bobby Weise won a third first place. The meet foretold of a lean season. Cindermen Have Little Depth in '58 Earlier in the year, the cross country team led by Smartt and John Macy brought Houston a third place in the national NCAA cross country finals. UH placed second by three points behind Oklahoma A&M in the '57 MVC meet. The Big Red was paced by Jerry Beck in the sprints; Buster Johnson in shot put; and a 440-yard relay team composed of Tim Lunday, Jack Parrington, Beck, and Charles Gary. 450 FRESHMAN SQUAD: Stan Levenson, Jerry Oinsworth, Johnny Reed, George Rankin. Tom Swanson. Back row: Terry Overall. Ji Macredie, Ian Goldfoot, Norman Jehle, and Andy Anderson. »»««.™
