The squad competed in invitational tournaments as well as zone and state championships. Coach Connie Payne led the six- member team as it won second place in zone competition and captured a berth in the state tournament. A close loss to Baylor eliminated Houston from the state title match but Coach Payne complimented the team on its showing. "Our performance at state showed a lot of enthusiasm, as we played very hustling games," she said. As the oldest women's sport on campus, the volleyball team did some hefty hustling of its own. With a record of 38-5, team members earned third and first places in the state and regional tournaments, respectively. In a hotly contested national tournament, UH volleyballers won third place to become the second nationally ranked women's sport in the program. Women's Athletics 179
