Transcript Junior Susanne Andersson returns the ball from the baseline in a match versus Alabama Birmingham's Andre Koppl. Andersson held the Cougars' No. 1 spot during the fall season. Photo By: Mark Smith Coach Stina Mosvold called the 1997 women's tennis team "the strongest team that UH has had in a longtime." With talen ted young players like Lucy Kelbert and Susanne Andersson on the roster, Mosvold has proven her right to boast. entering a new conference is not always easy, but entering a new conference with a team full of talent, charisma and dedication made the transistion easier for the 1996-97 University of Houston womens tennis team. After a successful fall season, the team was poised and ready to enter Conference USA and meet the goals set by head coach Stina Mosvold and the players. "(Our goals) include winning C -USA, attaining a top 50 ranking or better and making the NCAA regionals!' Mosvold said. Entering the 20th season of UH tennis, Mosvold said the team was prepared to take on the new challenges that lie ahead and the addition of three new players boosted team morale and all- around performance. "This is the strongest team that UH has had in a long time!' Mosvold said. "This is definitely the best team that we've put on the court since I've been the head coach!' Phenoms? Andrew J. Ferrar En route to their goal of making the NCAA Regionals, the Cougars had to face one of the toughest schedules, taking on seven teams raked in the top 50 or higher. To the teams benefit, over half (10 of 12) of its matches were played on the home courts at the UH Varsity Tennis Complex. "You tend to have a slight advantage when your opponent has to travel!' Mosvold said. Brazilian sophomore Luciane Kelbert ranked No. 1 as the season opened in Albuquerque, N.M. Winning the 1996 Lady Cougar Fall Classic and compiling a 15-3 fall record led to her becoming the No. 1 seed. Two-year letter winner Susanne Andersson competed with Kelbert for the coveted No. 1 spot during the spring season. Andersson held that spot entering the fall season, but posted a lackluster 9-4 record. Mosvold said Andersson brings to the court a strong work ethic and "the best all-around game on the court!' Newcomer Mette Sigmundstad of Norway, also competed for the No. 1 spot. A sophomore transfer from Auburn, she brought a 6-foot-1 inch height advantage to the court.
