Transcript Senior first baseman Jason Schreiber glares at the mound before a pitch. Schreiber was one of the Cougars' better hitters, hovering around a high .280 batting average for much of the 1 997 season. photo courtesy of: Adrees Latif The season opener against the nation's fourth-ranked team would be indicative of the Cougars play the entire season. Runs were scored, the pitching staff struggled and after nine innings, the Cougars won the game. Who would have known then the ball club would be amongst the nation's finest? The University of Houston mens baseball team got off to an explosive season start in 1997, beating then fourth-ranked Rice in their season opener at Cameron Field, 16-12. This win was the first in a series of Cougar victories over top 25 teams, including a two-game sweep over then-13th ranked Wichita State. Houston recorded its best conference start since 1983 with a three-game sweep over the St. Louis Billikins on March 14, 15 and 16 at Cougar Field. This put Houston in a tie for first place in Conference USA. "Anytime you get off to a 3-0 start," said coach Rayner Noble, "it is great for the confidence of the team." On March 19, Houston beat ex-Southwest Conference rival Texas A&M by a score of 6-4. But this win did not come without a cost — while running to first base, sophomore leftfielder Mike Madrano sprained his ankle, benching him for a good part of the At Their Best Catherine Taylor rest of the season. However, freshman Brandon Caraway stepped up and made a strong replacement for the injured Madrano. Cougar bats were on fire this season as two Houston players received top conference honors. Senior third baseman Dustin Carr was named C -USA player of the week March 24, due to his exceptional work in the St. Louis series and the Cougar road trip to Florida the week of Spring Break. "Its an honor to be recognized like that," Carr said. "I am very excited." The following week, Houston again claimed the C -USA player of the week as junior centerfielder Goefrey Tomlinson was awarded the title. Tomlinson had a great series against Southern Mississippi, and was vital to the Cougar offense all season. In the conference tournament, the team went undefeated, beating North Carolina-Charlotte in the championship game, 22- 7. Catcher Scottie Scott was named tournament MVP. However, Houston was not as lucky in the NCAA Regionals. The team lost two straight in the double-elimination tournament. The first time the Cougars returned to the regionals since 1990, it was a surprising ending to a season of dreams. Athletics
