Transcript Freshman breaststroke swimmer Kari Anderson pushes towards the finish of her race. Anderson competed in three events this past season - breast- stroke, freestyle and individual Medley. Photo Courtesy of: Sports Information Swimming is often thought of as a sport of individuals. When a swim team displays a sense of genuine unity, it's lauded as an extraordinary achievement. The 1997 Cougar women's swim team is due credit for its efforts towards togetherness. there is one word to describe the 1997 Lady Cougars swim team, it would be camaraderie. The 16-member team consisted of six seniors and seven freshman, but the age difference did not prevent the team from becoming a close unit. UH finished fifth place at the first-ever National Independent Championships, held at Southern Illinois University, by cumulating a total of 435 points. Although the team hoped to do better at the NIC, they were well prepared, put in long hours of practice and were pulling for each others success regardless of the final outcome. Laughter often echoed throughout the practice facility during team practices. The squad maintained a loose atmosphere in practice — teasing, joking and enjoying each other's company ~ but got down to business once head coach Ginger Hurley began instructing her team. Marco A. Deigado Senior Barbara Austin, who finished sixth in the 100-meter freestyle in the NIC, points to the different characteristics of team members and the team training camp held in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., as catalysts behind the team's impressive unity. "(Training camp) was hard work, but everybody was together as a team|' Austin said. "Everyone on the team is a genuinely nice person!' Though Austin said she acknowledged that even nice people can have arguments, she added she was pleasantly surprised that there were not many vocal disagreements within the squad an occurrence that can easily lead to the unraveling of a team. "It's amazing to have a group of girls who don't fight," Austin said. Freshman Susie Carnett, who finished in eight place in the 200-meter butterfly, said she agrees with Austin's assessment of the training camps uniting effect, and that the friendships made there is what she will remember more than the actual trip to Florida.
