Transcript Senior Darius Pemberton streaks around the first turn of a 200-meter dash, leaving the field behind him. Pemberton was the UH version of Jim Thorpe this past season, competing in SIX DIFFERENT EVENTS. PHOTO By: SHANE Schiermeier The University of Houston can boast one of the nation's most prestigious recent histories in track and field. But even with great individual runners like Carl Lewis and Leroy Burrell, the Cougars never earned a team title. Patience, diligence, and a bit of luck finally brought one home this year. K^Jne thing former Cougar track and field legends such as Carl Lewis, Leroy Burrell, Frank Rutherford and Joe DeLoach never earned in their days at University of Houston was a team conference title. Facing national powers like Arkansas and Texas every year in the Southwest Conference proved to be too much to overcome for a team that always featured some individual Olympic-level athletes, but was never deep enough to win the overall team competition. A new conference, better recruits (due in part to the new Athletic/Alumni Center), a home track advantage and the versatili ty of Cougars senior athlete Darius Pemberton all played large role; in a 1997 Conference USA indoor title for the UH mens track team As hosts in the Bill Yeoman Fieldhouse, the Cougars entered the championships with a swagger, almost guaranteeing they would come out with the title. They had good reason to be confident. Pemberton, primarily The Long Rug Adam Burnt a 60-meter hurdler and long jumper, competed in six events. The versatile New Jersey native added the triple jump and high jump to his repertoire, events he had not competed in since high school. Pemberton also ran a leg on the 1600-meter relay team and ran the indivdual 200-meter dash. Pemberton came in first in every event he competed in except for a seventh-place finish in the 200. The result was an easy conference title for the Cougars. Houston scored 170 points — second place Marquette earned only 85. Pemberton alone scored 52 points, more than five other entire teams, earning him C -USA Male Athlete of the Year honors in the process. Sophomore shot putter John Davis came back early from a hernia operation, giving up the option to redshirt the indoor season and earn an extra year of eligibility, and took first place in the shot. Sophomore middle-distance runner Dennis Darling (200 meter) and C -USA Freshman of the Year Karim Alston (800 meter) also won their respective events. UH head coach Tom Tellez earned C -USA Coach of the Year to round out the awards for the mens team. {Continued on page 259) 256 Athletics
