Transcript Junior forward Galen Robinson leaps up and slams the basketball over two defenders. Robinson led the cougars in scoring this season, averaging 1 7 points a game. Photo By: Edmond Vahedi A year ago the 17-10 Cougars enjoyed their best season under head coach Alvin Brooks. Naturally, expectations ran high leading into the 96-97 men's basketball season, but questionable recruiting and poor results put Brooks under fire. ost college teams start out every season with a slogan. The catchy phrase on promotional posters, schedules and media guides might have been "Eyes on the Prize," "City Ball" or "Taking Conference USA by Storm." In retrospect, the most fitting phrase for the 1996-97 Houston Cougars mens basketball team is "Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda." "Woulda" been better if they had not counted so much on walk-on players after losing five scholarship players for part or all of the season. "Coulda" won several close games where they faded in the latter few minutes of the game, including the season-ending loss to Alabama-Birmingham in the first round of the C -USA Championship Tournament, where the Cougars blew a 15-point second half lead. "Shoulda" been better with the talent they did have. But instead, a team that had finished 17-10 and second Disappointment place in the Southwest Conference in the 1995-96 season finished 11-16 and 10th place in Houstons first year in C -USA. There was a lot of hype going into the new league that features basketball powers such as Louisville, Cincinnati and Memphis. With a tougher schedule and a loss of three starters from the previous year (replaced by junior college transfer point guard Shamahn McBride and walk-ons), the drop off was a bigger disappointment than expected. The only thing the Cougars were consistent at during the season was turnovers, averaging 20 per game. Senior guards/forwards Kenya Capers and Willie Byrd spent most of the season fighting off ankle problems (both), flu (Byrd) and ineligibility (Capers). One bright spot for the Cougars was two juniors who had career years, guard Damon Jones and forward Galen Robinson. Jones had been a jump-shoot first, second, third and fourth kind of player as a freshman. In his sophomore year, he learned how to pass. In the 1996-97 season, he began to use his speed to beat players off the dribble almost at will. As a result, he led the team in assists and was second in scoring.
