Photo By: Edmond Vahedi Player injuries proved to be the Cougars' toughest opponent this season. Yet despite this, the team rallied to an impressive 24-8 record -- falling just short of the Conference USA title. Considering the circumstances, it was an impressive season for a talented team of veterans. 244 I Athletics An a season where injuries plagued a very talented group of 10 women, the Houston Cougars volleyball team had much to be excited about when their season ended with a loss at Colorado State in the opening round of the NCAA Championship Tournament. Sophomore Kristin Guidish was lost after she tore her right anterior cruciate ligament in the second match of the season. Senior Stacey Craven saw very limited action this year due to knee injuries, and sophomore setter Bethany Hill left the team. "Not all of the injuries were visible," said head coach Bill Walton. "We had one case of depression, and then there were different things like ankle, knee, and shoulder problems — we started out with 14 players and ended up with eight that we could put on the floor;' With a very tough schedule ahead of them to open the season, the Cougars set a goal to win Conference USA. They had a chance to do so until the very last game of conference play, when Tough Luck Andrew J. Ferraro they lost to C -USA champion South Florida. The season opened in Michigan as the Cougars prepared to take on the NCAA elite Stanford Cardinals, the Michigan State Spartans and former Southwest Conference foe the Texas Longhorns. Despite losing all three matches, the Cougars found that they were a good team and that the wins eventually would come. After defeating Southwest Texas State for their first win of the season, the Cougars went to the Kentucky Conference Challenge and won all three matches against Central Florida, Purdue and Kentucky. They brought home a trophy and a lot of confidence for their efforts. "I was very impressed with the way Sally Emerson stepped up;' Walton said. "When things were at their most dire point - we had lost three matches early — we put Sally in against a major school in Purdue and she really responded well." Two of their next four games would be against Top 25 ranked teams. Despite a valiant effort from the Cougars, the Florida Gators and C -USA rival Louisville got the best of Houston.
