Transcript (Continued from page 250) Despite seven rushing touchdowns, 794 rushing yards and 1,431 all-purpose yards, the superfreshmans most memorable play was when he pitched a 47-yard touchdown pass, his first and only pass attempt of the season, to begin the onslaught against the hapless Cardinals. Sanford was the consensus C -USA Freshman of the Year. The defense often struggled, but came up big in the blowout of Louisville, nearly shutting out the inept Cardinal offense. Junior linebacker Mike Parker was the top tackier with 104 for the season. The secondary was led by senior cornerback Delmonico Montgomery, who had six interceptions and 16 broken passes in 1996. Junior defensive ends Rusty Foster and Louis Hampton chipped in a combined 11 sacks. After the win over Louisville, the Cougars were still not guaranteed a Liberty Bowl bid. They had the tie-breaker over Southern Miss, but East Carolina, slated to join the conference for football in 1997, was also a contender. A few days later, the bowl was awarded to Houston. For the Cougars, none of whom had seen a winning college season, let alone a conference championship, liberty couldn't have been sweeter. Senior tailback Jermaine Williams celebrates after the Conference USA-clinching VICTORY OVER LOUISVILLE. THE WIN ALSO led to a Liberty Bowl birth, the first Cougar post-season appearance in eight years.
