Transcript Smith settles Leaving behind his home in Utah, Dr. Arthur K. Smith assumed the newly-created Chancellor/President position for the University of Houston on April 1. In 1996, the UH System Board of Regents voted to combine the positions of UH System Chancellor and UH President. Smith is the sixth A chancellor and 11th president, but the first to hold the titles simultane ously. "Having one person in the position sounds like a good idea, if it will make decisions come faster;' said Wendy Hermann, a senior communication disorders major. Freshman kinesiology major Bridget Burton agreed, saying, "I don't feel like students were very informed about who he is, but anyone new will bring in different styles and ways of thinking which will lead to change;' However, those who did have the opportunity to meet with Smith said they found the experience pleasurable. "I am personally delighted to have someone like Smith to build upon the advances we have seen over the last 18 months. The Executive Committee of the Faculty Senate and the UH council chairs are excited at the prospect of his assuming the combined position;' said Dr. Karl Kadish, former Faculty Senate President. The search committee, consisting of individuals from the Board of Regents, the faculty, administration, students, alumni and community, selected Smith from a pool of more than 200 nominees. intial time and attention over the by Don LeGrand "We devoted sub; past six months collecting nominations, distilling the initial candidate pool, interviewing candidates and arriving at this recommendation;' said Search Committee Chairman Gary Rosenthal. "The search committee concluded that Smith has the qualifications, experience and judgment to lead the university to the next century!' Smith served as president of the University of Utah before coming to UH. Under Smiths leadership, the school increased its research funding to more than $173 million annually, nearly doubled its annual support from donors to $79.7 million and increased support for undergraduate teaching. "I feel that Smith will be an outstanding asset and representative of the UH System and UH. The Students' Association looks forward to working closely with him in the future;' said SA President John Moore. Leaving his post at the University of Utah, Arthur Smith became the University of Houston's first chancellor/president. The position combined the duties of System chancellor with those of UH main campus president.
