Transcript BHP first identified the Gulf of Mexico deepwater as an attractive exploration province offering major reserve potential m mid- 1992. To make the necessary potential contribution to BHP's longer term growth objectives, both in terms of profit contribution and reserve growth, it was decided to seek to capture a major proportion of the basin's undeveloped potential. The means to do this was to focus mainly on acquiring acreage in the shelf/flex trend and in deepwater and ultra deepwater fairways of known prospectivity. In doing so, the company sought to establish its position in advance of the expected industry competition for ultra deepwater acreage, a trend which was clearly demonstrated in the 1996 and 1997 lease rounds. Prior to the 1995 lease sales, BHP was ranked the seventeenth largest acreage holder in deepwater Gulf of Mexico. BHP is now in the top ten leaseholders with approximately 200 leases and is maintaining an active drilling campaign. Apart from the above lease acquisition activities, BHP has also been successful in gaining access to acreage through farm-ins and acreage trades. BHP takes great pnde in applying leading edge technology to our GoM effort in terms of subsalt imaging and AVO, pettoleum systems analysis and basin modeling, reservoir characterization and borehole imaging, etc. We are actively recruiting from America's top petroleum schools and are constantly looking for top-quality professionals in all disciplines.
