Transcript Kyle Ben., transplant Just three years ago, but that has not stopped the native Houstonian from inspiring others in the College of Natural Science and Mathematics. Born with a congenital heart, the applied analysis major had live with a pacemaker for 18 years, and was then diagnosed with heart failure. Doctors tried treating his condition with medication, but their attempts were not successful. After a psychological evaluation, he was placed on a transplant recipient list. In December 1004, Bennett received his heart transplant. Now his days are filled with math classes, in addition to working as a teaching assistant for Calculus I. In his Job, he assists students preparing for quizzes and does one-on-one tutoring. "I've always liked math and it came easy to me**, Bennett said. "I use take my brothers* and sisters* math book and do the problems.** Bennett said he was roped into coming to UH thanks to a scholarship from the Houston Livestock Show and Bodeo, but location and the department of his major also played into the decision. "I came here because of the easy commute and UH had a strong math department.** Bennett said. p In February, Bennett was inducted into Phi Kappa Phi honor society, one of the highest honors a UH student can obtain. After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in math in May, Bennett said he would like to obtain a Job in actuarial science, which involves applied mathematics. "I like the applied math, not theoretical math**, Bennett said. "I like to take what's found, and apply to real world.** Perhaps this would be his chance to give a little back to a world that has already given him so much. People
